Files & Folders

Royal Roads provides a storage area, with a maximum of 20MB, on our servers for you to keep your RRU program/course related documents.

To access this storage space:

On Campus:

Log on to an RRU computer in one of the labs or in the library:

  • Personal files - you have been assigned a folder in the 'home.dirs' folder  (home.dirs\username)
    • In Windows Explorer, you will see one of your drive letters maps to the 'home.dirs/username' folder
    • Use this to store any of your assignments, research documents etc.
  • Shared team files - use your workgroup folder  (workgroups\RRU)
    • In Windows Explorer, you will see one of your drive letters maps to the 'workgroups/RRU' folder
    • Navigate through the RRU folder until you find your course and cohort area.  Your instructor will provide this information for you.

Off Campus (or your personal non-RRU computer on campus) use FTP:

For full instructions on using FTP with different browsers:

Best FTP practices:

  1. Open your file on the server
  2. Save it to your local computer (in case you lose connection with the server)
  3. Make your changes to the file
  4. Resave the file to your local computer
  5. Open FTP and copy the file back to the server.

When saving a file to my home.dirs it says it is read-only. What's up?

You have probably exceeded your 20 MB quota. You can check by:
    1. Double-clicking on My Computer.
    2. Double-clicking the home.dirs.
    3. Right-click on your folder, and select Properties.

The total size of your folder will be displayed.  If it is over the 20 MB limit, you must delete some files in order to free up some space.
