VOIP Phones
If you plan to bring a VoIP (Voice over IP/broadband) phone from home, RRU Computer Services has important information which should be reviewed regarding support and special issues with external VoIP phones in residence.
If you choose to have your own VoIP phone as well as your computer connected at the same time, a hardware broadband router will be necessary to connect both of these devices to the network.
Please Note: RRU Computer Services will not support any VoIP (or router) software or hardware issues.

1. Can learners bring their own Voice over IP phones from home?
Learners will be able to use their own Voice over IP phones in residence rooms, but will be responsible for connecting and supporting this service themselves.
2. Do I need to bring any special equipment to connect my personal VoIP in residence?
Your residence room has only one network connection, so if you want to connect a computer AND your VOIP unit, you will require a router/hub/switch. (Please note: We do not supply or support routers.) Your router should be plugged into the high-speed network connection at the wall. Your personal VoIP phone and computer will then connect to the router. For any additional instructions, please see the vendor site for your VoIP phone or router.
3. What should I do with the university phone that is in my room?
The residence phones that are supplied within your room must remain connected directly to their wall connection at all times. Learners who bring their personal VoIP phones are also expected to answer the university provided phone and voicemail as it is the only official telephone contact the university will have with you while you are on-campus.
4. Can I transfer my assigned university phone number to my personal VoIP phone?
No, you cannot transfer your university residence extension to your personal VoIP phone. Residence phone numbers are extensions rather than actual phone numbers. As a result they are non-transferable. You will likely need a new phone number from your VoIP service provider unless you already have one with your device.
5. Can I transfer and forward calls between my personal VoIP phone and my residence VoIP?
No, you will not be able to transfer or forward calls between your personal VoIP phone and the residence phone. Third party VoIP services are separate from the University's phone system and, as a result, features like transfer and forwarding will not work between your VoIP phone and the provided residence phone.
6. Can I direct dial campus extensions using my personal VoIP phone?
You will NOT be able to dial any on-campus extensions directly using your personal VoIP phone. This includes the emergency number for Security (2525). You will have to dial the Royal Roads University switchboard (250-391-2511) or, if you know the extension, (250-391-2600 Ext#) to be able to contact on campus extensions. Depending on your VoIP service, long distance charges may apply.
7. Will RRU Computer Services provide support for my personal VoIP phone?
RRU Computer Services does not provide support for VoIP (or router) hardware or software issues.
8. What will happen if my personal VoIP phone causes conflicts with the residence network?
If your personal VoIP phone equipment or router creates any sort of problem with the RRU residence network, your connection could be shut down. We do our best to notify clients as soon as possible if we have to disable connections, but this communication may not happen prior to disconnection.
9. Will my residence fees be reduced if I bring my own VoIP phone?
There will be no adjustment in residence fees for learners who choose not to use the university provided residence phones.
10. Will RRU Computer Services open ports on the RRU firewall to allow my VOIP phone to work?
No. RRU Computer Services will not reconfigure the RRU firewall. As long as the VOIP connection is being sent and received through Port 80, there shouldn't be any issues with connecting. If you are experiencing connection issues, you will need to contact the vendor for your VOIP phone for support.
